Mainstream team breaking ground

Mainstream’s pan-African joint venture with Actis, Lekela Power reaches 1,340 megawatts

Lekela is a pan-African renewable energy generation platform.  Established in 2015, Lekela is a partnership between Mainstream and Actis, the global pan emerging market private equity firm, and builds on the success of two previous ventures between Actis and Mainstream in South Africa and Chile (Round 1 of the South African Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers programme and Aela Energía in Chile).

To date, Lekela has secured renewable energy projects in South Africa, Ghana, Egypt  and Senegal with a total portfolio of 1,340 megawatts.  In November, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with President Al-Sisi in London for a 250 megawatt project at the Gulf of Suez.

Lekela has two wind projects under construction in South Africa and the 80 megawatt Noupoort was delivered into operation, safely, on time and on budget in July 2016.  A further two are expected to start construction next year.  The company will begin building the first utility-scale wind farm in Ghana, in 2016.

It will deliver utility scale wind and solar projects into commercial operation in Africa over the next five years. Energy is critical to the African continent’s continued growth and Lekela is positioned to provide secure, reliable and competitive renewable energy to consumers such as government, utilities and large-scale industrial consumers.
