Noupoort Wind Plant unites the community through sport

Noupoort Wind Plant recently hosted a three-day sporting weekend event, bringing together the town’s community. Over R36 000’s worth of prizes, across the various sporting disciplines, was handed over during the course of the weekend.

The aim of this community event has been to promote an interest in sports amongst youth and children, with participants as young as 3 years old.  The focus, however, was on the youth, with emphasis on helping to integrate the Noupoort community.

“The festivities went far beyond just sporting events. The greater objective was integration and cohesion,” explained Economic Development Manager for Noupoort Wind Farm, Livhuwani Sikhipha.

The event was held at the Noupoort Sporting grounds and was attended by a cross-section of the community, including the Mayor of Umsobomvu Municipality and representatives from Noupoort Wind Plant. The children’s Olympics, rugby, soccer and netball tournaments were amongst the favourite events, with the top three teams in each of the sporting codes winning prizes, sponsored by the Wind Farm. “The prize giving ceremony will take place mid-November 2017,” added Nwachukwu.

“The events were an opportunity to shine a light on the real issues that young people are facing, and it is for this reason that we took the opportunity to address the issues of HIV/AIDS awareness, substance abuse and teenage pregnancies by encouraging young people to participate and compete in sports,” she concluded.

Support from various stakeholders and of course members of the community has tempted Noupoort Wind Plant to make this an annual event on the community calendar.
